Time and tide

I was talking to a bloke at work today about how much the days are getting longer. He looked slightly confused and said: “Do you mean more daylight?”

Yes, I did πŸ™‚

I found out through extensive research (looked on the BBC weather website) that at the moment, the days are lengthening by about three minutes every day. Tomorrow, sunrise will be at 7.49am and sunset at 4.28pm, by Wednesday, it’ll be 7.44am and 4.34pm. And that makes me happy.

It won’t be too long before I can stop using this:

It’s a Phillips wake-up light; a Christmas present which arrived late so I’ve only been using it a couple of weeks. I’m sure you’ve seen them but basically, the light starts coming on, gradually increasing in brightness, from about 20 minutes before you’ve set the alarm. You can choose the sound too, which also gets gradually louder.

The first morning I used it, I actually thought something along the lines of: “I think I’ll wake up now” and did, peacefully to the sound of birds singing and a nice glowing light. It beats being forcibly extracted from sleep by a normal alarm and I’ve definitely felt more energetic in the mornings.

Another (kind of) Β lack-of-time related thing I’ve tried this week is this:

I did a business story on a salon that’s just bought one of these Flabelos machines and the owner let me try it out. If says that a 10-minute session on it is equivalent to an hour’s workout and it claims to get you firmed and toned, increase your circulation, improve cellulite and help with back pain.

It’s also very entertaining. You stand on the plate while it vibrates, gradually getting faster and faster so by about eight minutes in, you’re shaking your booty enough to make Beyonce jealous. Believe me, you don’t want anyone behind you while you’re on one of these.

Something tells me it’s not quite the “equivalent” of an hour’s exercise though. I can’t see that there are cardiovascular or strength-building benefits – but I’ve spoken to two people who have used it regularly and said they’ve really noticed a difference and maybe it does help with toning…. not entirely convinced myself!

I haven’t been back. I’ve been saving time with quick dinners instead, like these Vegideli mini bites:

They’re delicious, quick and with not too bad an ingredients list. It’s rare to find something like that that’s gluten-free too. Also, my current favourite:

Goats’ cheese and spinach omelette, cooked in about three minutes, perfect πŸ™‚

And also, nothing to do with anything else except my own stupidity but entertaining anyway, here’s what was on my kitchen floor a couple of hours ago:

I really should have done something about that loose handle πŸ™‚

    I have been religiously checking sunrise/sunset times for the past few weeks and because I know there’s an extra three minutes of daylight I can definitely feel it hehe. I’ve felt the dark a lot more this winter than usual, and the day it’s light at 7am I know I’ll be so happy haha. Not sure I’m very convinced about those power plate things either, I’m never sold when products say “equivalent to 1 hour” etc.

    Eeek hope you didn’t burn yourself with that pan of water! Did you rescue the broc? (3 second rule!)

    • I really laughed when I read this as “three-second rule” is exactly what I thought – and I did save it πŸ™‚
      And me too, I’m feeling the dark more every year and every extra bit of daylight is such a bonus!

    I think it has started getting noticeably lighter in the evenings again, hurrah! Yeah those powder plate things seem like a re-invention of those weird things from the 50’s or something, with the belt that went around the waist and wiggled. I can see that doing strength poses on them while it is moving will make you work harder at stabilising, but I can’t see how it is the same as an hour.

    • It’s brilliant leaving work when it’s not completely dark – can’t wait for proper light evenings! I agree with you; exercising on them might have an extra effect but I’m sure just standing there doesn’t…

    I’ve noticed the creeping sunrise too – slightly earlier every day. I swear I notice more or less to the minute without any apps etc. because I’m so attuned to either running or (bleh) cycling as the Sun rises. I’m glad it’s making you feel better!

    Not that I’m one to talk, but I’ve never seen any ‘fit’ looking people using those Powerplates – they’re all either obviously too lazy to really work out (again, pot, kettle, you get the idea) or very, very skinny and would look that way regardless of any Powerplating because they have their diets down so rigidly.

    • Yeah, me too – can’t wait till I don’t need my bike lights and reflective vest in the mornings!
      That’s so true too; it’s always the not-so-fit-looking people – but there’s no pot/kettle at all about laziness with you Jess; you do so much! It was irritating about the pan but at least I’d drained the water out so no burns πŸ™‚

  5. Oh we had a big to do regarding one of those vibro plate things at work. One of the community groups bought one with some funding we gave them (not what they told us the grant was for in the first place) obviously I would have turned down a grant for one of those, so expensive and 1 hours workout my arse! Can’t wait till we have better sunlight again!

    • Ooh, that’s a bit cheeky! Bit of a waste of money I reckon, would have been much better spent on outdoor equipment or something… I can’t see how they can say it’s equivalent to an hour at all πŸ™‚

  7. They’ve got one of those machines at work, although I’ve never been tempted to try it – I’ll stick to my usual fitness routine thank you.
    I got one of those lamps for Christmas and absolutely love it – it’s so nice to wake up to some natural(ish) lught rather than being rudely awakened by my phone alarm. I’m at my parents house at the moment and don’t have my lamp with me, so I’m a complete grumpy guts first thing in the morning πŸ˜‰

    • Exactly. One of the things I like most about exercising is how much better you feel for it – I definitely didn’t get that from standing on the machine!
      And I think the light makes so much difference too; I’ve really noticed being in a better mood because I’m not a morning person at all πŸ™‚
