A Nakd post…

No, Nakd!

Hee hee, I don’t want to scare anyone off! Nakd bars are pretty much the English equivalent of Larabars, from what I can make out… the gluten-free ones consist of just nuts, dried fruit and natural flavourings. the Cashew Cookie one, above, says on its ingredients list: Raw cashews (51 %) raw dates (49%).

How good is that; you’ve got to love short ingredients lists and they don’t get much shorter!

So when I heard that Nakd had brought out some new flavours, I went to the website to check them out. They now do Cocoa Mint, Berry Delicious and Cocoa Delight. And, they offer a trial pack, which contains one of each! So, with my greed true journalist’s burning desire to find out the truth, I ordered one and waited expectantly…

I might have to complain – where did the other halves of those two go?? πŸ™‚

So I’ve tried the Berry Delicious and Cocoa Delight ones and… I’m not that convinced. Yes, they’re nice, although the berry one wasn’t exactly my cup of tea, and they’re definitely healthy, BUT… they seem a bit dry. Although I do like the Cashew Cookie (and the Pecan Pie) I know a way to make better ones – for a fraction of the price…

Enter Katie’s Fudge Babies. When I first saw this recipe, I noticed Katie had written: Make. These. Now. And, I always do what I’m told πŸ™‚

And I was hooked. Instantly. These are as rich, sweet and decadent-tasting as the most indulgent cream/butter truffles BUT they’re healthy enough to eat for breakfast (which I may have done, once or twice. Or a lot.) After trying a huge number of different nutty variations, all in that same journalistc vein of course, I settled on my favourite: 80g dates, 10g each of cashews, walnuts and Brazils and 1tbsp cocoa powder. With, for an especially decadent addition, almond butter sauce (1tbsp of almond butter, mixed with 1tbsp milk and a drizzle of maple syrup… if food were porn, that combination would have a triple X!)

My most recent variation, dates, Brazils, cashews and coconut, was made into tiny bite-size chunks.

What a great recipe… muchΒ more moist than the Nakd bars!Β And Katie’s also hosting an Artisana giveaway as we speak… another reason to check out her great blog πŸ™‚

So, anyone who hasn’t made Fudge Babies yet, get on it! You will NOT be disappointed πŸ™‚

  2. I love nakd bars!! I discovered them at Christmas last year in my local health food shop and I was hooked from then on. Just a question about the new flavours, does the cocoa delight taste like coco loco?
    Been reading through your blog and your eats sound amazing. I think I may have to pinch a few of them very sooon! πŸ™‚

      I haven’t tried the cocoa loco ones because they’re not gluten free but looking at the ingredients, I’d imagine the new ones are similar but possibly more chocolatey πŸ™‚
      If you like the bars, you’ll love the Fudge Babies… I can’t comment on the oat bars but I think the babies are much better than the gluten-free ones!

    My kids love Nakd bars and they are definitely convenient, but Katie’s fudgy babies are a family favourite and a fridge staple. We love them!
