Football, fruit and firewalking

I had a busy day yesterday, involving this:

I went to see Charlton (my football team) play Fulham in the FA Cup. A friend of mine’s a Fulham season ticket-holder and as soon as the draw was made, he rang to see if I wanted to go.

It was brilliant. To my shame, I hadn’t been to see Charlton play for ages and I wish I did go more; I love the atmosphere of live football, I love watching the game… I didn’t love the 4-0 scoreline of course, but then it’s only the cup; this season’s all about the league 🙂

I’d worn my Charlton shirt because I’d thought we were sitting in the neutral end but it turned out we were in the Fulham end, which meant I had to keep my jacket zipped up. Not that Fulham fans are likely to have a go, that is, they’re more likely to say something like “I say, I’d really rather you didn’t support the other team if you don’t mind”. Even if they did try it, It’s be something like “Do you mind awfully if I thump you on the nose?”

It’s not great sitting in the other stand but the Charlton stand was at full volume all the match, even when we were 4-0 down, mainly singing “top of the league” or “FA Cup, who gives a f***, Charlton Athletic, we’re going up” and, the one that made me laugh most about 85 minutes in, “one goal, we only want one goal”!

It was great but it was a long day so I’ve not done a huge amount today. I went up to the yard this morning, came back and cleaned the house, then got (slightly) creative in the kitchen.

I’d stored the apples from my tree in the shed and they’re just starting to be past their best so I peeled, chopped, roasted and blended them into more creamiest-ever apple puree. Very hard to resist 🙂

I used some in these cookies:

So addictive; don’t say I didn’t warn you!

And I made another version of these “truffles“, using dates instead of golden syrup:

Deeeeeeelicious! I’ve got bad, the last few months, for eating a couple of these cookies as part of my breakfast so I made those instead; much more acceptable in the morning.

I suppose trying to cut out at least one unhealthy habit almost counts as a New Year’s resolution… and another almost-one was to do more exciting things this year. I’m hopefully going to Dublin with a friend in the spring but also…

They’re organising a massive summer-long festival in the town where I work and they’re doing lots of things to raise money for it. And one, of them, as I found out the other day and immediately volunteered for – is firewalking.

Yep, I’m going to be walking on hot coals. And although even as I volunteered, I was wondering at my own sanity, I’m also so excited, it’s going to be brilliant. So excited, in fact, that I just wrote “walking on hot colas”. Which would be a different kettle of fish altogether… 🙂

Wow firewalking sounds intense and yet super awesome! I’ll be praying your toes won’t be roasted in the process haha
That creamy apple puree looks amazing, I bet it tasted delicious!

  2. Wow, that is so awesome… and scary! (Maybe not as scary as the people who actually swallow fire, but still…)

  3. Ahh that is so intense! I find that pretty scary, but of course it seems like no big deal to them 🙂 That apple puree sounds mighty tasty… off to check out the recipe now!

  4. You’re going to firewalk?! You’re intense, girl!

I think hot colas would be preferential 🙂
A couple of my friends did that last year (well, coals not colas) and it was a bit weird because before it started they all got taken to one side and spoken to- told how to do it properly/ without getting hurt. It did look like they actually did it but I am not sure!
Glad you still enjoyed the game too- I think most teams do not mind people in the wrong ends so long as you don’t scream in their faces if your team scores.

    • Hee hee, colas would definitely be better! That sounds similar; you get two hours’ “training” for it so apparently it doesn’t hurt and everyone can… apparently 🙂
And exactly, I think the people round me had worked it out when I didn’t cheer the Fulham goals but I wasn’t rude about it or anything so no one minded… not that I had the chance to cheer a Charlton goal though!

  6. Wow, firewalking sounds kind of scary but like an amazing experience! I can’t wait to hear about it! 🙂
Those cookies look delicious! I have no doubt that they’re addictive 😉

  7. You are so brave, but good for you, what an experience it will be! That apple sauce looks delicious 🙂

    • Thank you and yes, definitely one to tell the grandchildren! And roasting the apples for the sauce is definitely the way to go; it’s the smoothest ever and so delicious with Cox apples.

Apple puree? Cookies?? Truffles??? Now I’m hungry! 😉

  9. Hot coals!? How brave are you! 😀

  10. Mmm, cookies/truffles for breakfast! And lunch. And dinner. Especially when they’re “healthy,” then there isn’t even a need for an excuse.

And the soccer (ohh, so American…”football”) game looks like fun! I’m a huge hockey fan, but have only made it to one game this season, I feel like such a bad fan.

    • Well exactly! and even the cookies had quinoa in them and surely that makes them healthier than some = perfect for meals 🙂
It was a great game, even though we lost but I know what you mean about being a “bad fan” – I wish I could go more!

  11. Fire-walking sounds like a real adrenaline buzz. I’m sure you’ve not got a big chance of getting hurt, but I’m not sure that I could get over that initial fear. I can’t wait to hear about it after you’ve done it!

  12. Hannah says:

Teehee, I usually eat dark chocolate for breakfast, so you’re already better than me with the cookies 😉

  13. Errign says:

    Whooooa , firewalking? Way cool.

  14. Okay, I definitely cannot wait to hear more about firewalking! And walking on hot colas too! 😉

  15. Oh my gosh!!! You’re going to have to change your blog name to “eatinglikeafirewalker” 😉 hehe
